Savita Punia Biography

Savita Punia is an Indian field hockey player from Haryana, who plays as a goalkeeper of Indian national team. She represented India at Asian games held at Incheon in 2014 and Jakarta in 2018. In 2018, she was awarded the Arjuna Award for her contributions and achievements in Indian sports, especially field hockey. She is only the third woman goalkeeper to be conferred the award, after Tingongleima Chanu and Helen Mary. Savita was also awarded the Baljit Singh Goalkeeper of the Year award at the Hockey India Annual Awards in 2015.

 

Savita Punia was born on 11 July 1990 in Jodhkan village of Sirsa district in Haryana. She was encouraged by her grandfather Mahinder Singh to take up hockey. She was enrolled in the sports academy of district headquarters. She joined Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre at Hisar where she received training from Sunder Singh Kharab during her early years. He asked her to wear the goalkeeping gloves as he was almost sure that she is to become one of the top goalkeepers in future.

 

Initially she was not interested in the game. When her father spent 20000 rupees on her sports kit, she started seriously thinking about pursuing this field. When a national camp was held in Lucknow in 2007, she received training as a goalkeeper. In 2008 she debut international career and was a member of the team chosen for a four nation event in Netherlands and Germany. Since then she has spent more than one decade in international career.  She started representing India at the young age of 18.

 

She was a team member of India which won bronze medal in Junior Asia Cup in 2009. Over the years she has stopped many crucial goals to help her team emerge successful in their duels against other teams. Punia had made two crucial saves in the penalty shoot-out game and India finished with a bronze medal Women’s Asia Cup 2013 held in Malaysia. She was promised a job under the Haryana Government’s ‘Medal Lao, Naukri Pao’ scheme. But she is yet to earn a job.
