Saumyendranath Tagore Biography

Saumyendranath Tagore was a politician and the leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party of India who lived in the 20th century. He is a member of the famous intellectual Tagore family of Bengal. He was born to Sudhindranath Tagore, a member of Tagore family. He was the grandson of Dwijendranath Tagore, and grand-nephew of Rabindranath Tagore. For his revolutionary principles he has been arrested and jailed by British. Noted historian and art collector, Krishna Riboud was his niece. Following the death of her father at the age of 10, she was brought up by her uncle Saumyendranath Tagore, who deeply influenced her life later.

 

Saumyendranath Tagore was born on October 08, 1901 in Kolkata during British rule in India. After completing his matriculation, he graduated in Economics from the Presidency University in 1921. Since young he was deeply influenced by communist party and he was associated with the communist movement too. He joined into the 'Nikhil Bharat Chatra Sammelan' in Ahmedabad in 1920 and befriended Muzaffar Ahmed and Kazi Nazrul Islam.

 

He translated The Communist Manifesto in Bengali, which was published in Langal magazine. Tagore family was against the leftist ideologies, and hence his father sent him to Europe in 1927. But it only helped him. He got opportunity to interact with some international communist leaders, and he also represented to the 6th International Communist Congress in Moscow. He got arrested and jailed by British. When he returned to India, he was arrested once again and jailed for 8 years. Young Krishna Riboud witnessed the arrest of her uncle, who has been an influential figure to her since early teens.

 

After he got released, he started a new revolutionary party named as Revolutionary Communist Party of India. However over the years, the party got shattered. Tagore was a regular writer of Kallol group, and he wrote in French, Russian, German, English and Bengali. He also published a few books. He was married to Srimati Hutheesingh from a Jain family. Her brother Raj N. Hutheesingh married Krishna Nehru, sister of Jawaharlal Nehru. Thus he is related to Nehru family. He passed away on 22 September 1974 aged 72.
