Satyendra Nath Bose Biography

Satyendra Nath Bose was an Indian mathematician and physicist who developed a theory about the gaslike qualities of electromagnetic radiation. He is known for his works on quantum mechanics in 1920s and this laid foundation for the Bose-Einstein statistics and theory of Bose-Einstein condensate. He was given Padma Vibhushan award by Government of India in 1954. He could speak several languages and was an Esraj player.

He was born on 1st January 1894 in Calcutta in British India. He was the eldest of seven children. His father was Surendranath Bose and he worked in the Engineering Department of the East Indian Railway Company. He attended Hindu School in Calcutta and then attended Presidency College and earned the highest marks. He worked as the lecturer in physics department in the University of Calcutta. He joined Dhaka University in 1921.

He worked as the Reader of the University of Dhaka and wrote about Planck’s quantum radiation law. This mentions the importance of quantum statistics. He stayed in Europe and returned back to Dhaka in 1926 and became a professor and taught there till 1946. In 1956 he came to Calcutta University and was made professor emeritus.

When he submitted the paper on his discoveries, Physics journal refused to publish the paper and his findings were ignored. He then wrote to Albert Einstein about this and he agreed with him. Einstein sent his own paper in support of the paper of Bose to Zeitschrift fur Physik and was published together in 1924.

He translated the Einstein’s theory of General Relativity from German to English. His theory is known as Bose-Einstein Statistics. The phenomena are known as Bose-Einstein condensate. The particles with integer spin were named as Bosons after his name. He traveled Europe in 1924 and after a year in France working his Marie Curie, he met many more scientists. He was elected as the General President of the Indian Science Congress in 1944 and he became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1958. He died on 4th February 1974.
