Satpal Singh Biography 
Satpal Singh is a former leading wrestler of India, who currently serves as a wrestling coach. He is fondly called Guru Satpal and Mahabali Satpal too. One among the shining stars among Indian wrestlers, he won Gold Medal in 1982 Asian Games and a Bronze medal in 1974 Asian Games. He was the National Heavyweight Champion 16 times. One of the finest coaches India has ever produced, Satpal Singh is also known as the coach of Olympic medal winners, Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt. For his outstanding contributions to the field of wrestling and as a coach, Indian government honoured him with Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award most recently in 2015. He is also a recipient of Arjuna Award in 1974, Padma Shri in 1983, Dronacharya Award for Best Coach in 2009 and many more honours.
He was born in Bawana, Delhi on 11 May 1955. He received training from Guru Hanuman, one of the leading wrestlers of that period. He was conferred with the title of 'Mahabali' during his playing days. With early 1970s he began his successful journey as a wrestler and stood as National Heavyweight Champion 16 times. With the Bronze medal in 1974 Asian Games, he shot to fame and since then he stood at the top slot till 1980s. He was much feared by his opponents in the 70s and early 80s. In 1977 he was beaten by Harishchandra Birajdar, just a couple of years before his retirement.
Singh played his longest match in Belgaum in 1981. He played the match for long 40 minutes and finally beat (Rustam-i-Hind) Dadu Chaugle to win this longest played game. Later he has trained numerous wrestlers, and made them professional enough to compete many international level championships. Yet he strives hard to improve the quality of Indian players to win more medals in the upcoming Olympics.
