Satish Alekar Biography 
Satish Alekar is a Marathi playwright, actor, and theatre director. He is a founder member of the Theatre Academy of Pune. His noted plays are Mahanirvan (1974), Mahapoor (1975), Atirekee (1990), Pidhijat (2003), Mickey ani Memsahib (1973), and Begum Barve (1979), all produced by the same academy. He is one among the most influential theatre artists of Modern Marathi theatre, aside Mahesh Elkunchwar and Vijay Tendulkar. He has also worked as the head of Centre for Performing Arts, University of Pune from 1996 to 2009. In 1994, he received Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Playwriting for Marathi. In 2012, he was conferred with Padma Shri by Indian government.
Satish Alekar was born in Delhi and brought up in Pune. Thus he got opportunity to associate with Marathi language and theater. His school life was spent at New English School and degree from Fergusson College. He received PG in biochemistry from University of Pune in 1972. Since college days, he used to perform on stage as stage actor. Impressed by his work, he was invited by director Bhalba Kelkar to Progressive Dramatic Association. Alekar wrote and directed his first one-act play Jhulta Pool in 1969. This group split in 1973 and Satish became a part of newly formed Theater Academy in Pune.
Alekar has also been associated with many international plays. The Tisch School of Arts at New York University invited him in 2003 to teach a course on Indian Theatre. A few of the noted one act plays of Satish include - Memory (1969), Bhajan (1969), Ek Zulta Pool (1971), Dar Koni Ughadat Naahi (1979) and Bus Stop (1980). His adapted plays include – Judge, Supari, Nashibvan Baiche Don , Karmachari, Yamuche Rahasya, Bhint, Valan and Alshi Uttarvalyachi Gosht.
