Satinath Bhaduri Biography

Satinath Bhaduri was a renowned Bengali novelist who lived in the 20^th century, known by the pseudonym, Chitra Gupta. He was also a politician. He was the first recipient of Rabindra Puraskar, the highest honorary literary award given by state of West Bengal. He shared the award aside Niharranjan Ray and the award was given in the year 1950. He received Rabindra Puraskar for Jaagari – his first published novel. He has authored many satire short stories, and also black comedies. He has been deeply influenced by the life style of Bihar and it is well reflected in his works as well.

Satinath Bhaduri was born on 27 September 1906 in Purnia, Bihar. His father Indubhusan Bhaduri was a lawyer. His family originally belongs to Krishnanagar in the district of Nadia. Satinath completed his Master’s degree from University of Patna in 1930, and later did his law studies. Following his father’s footsteps he too started his professional career as a lawyer. He worked as a lawyer during 1932 and 1939 and after that got attached to freedom struggle movement and national politics. He served as district secretary of Purnia of Indian National Congress in the early 1940s, and has also served jail two times.

Soon after Indian independence, he fell out with Indian National Congress and joined the Socialist Party. He was associated with the party till his death. Among the masses he gained popularity as a writer than a politician. Many of his short stories were a satire take on social injustice and other social and political evils existed in the society then. He published his first novel, Jaagari in 1946 and the work was awarded the first Rabindra Puraskar. Dhorai Charita Manas – in two volumes, Gananayak, Chitragupter File, Achin Ragini, Aparichita, Sangkat and Alok Drsti are other major works.
