Satarupa Sanyal Biography

Satarupa Sanyal is a multi-facet personality of Bengali cinema. She is known as a film director (parallel cinema), producer, actress, poet and social activist. She is known for feminist instincts. She is trained in Hindustani Classical music and Rabindra Sangeet and has performed for the All India Radio also. She has acted in Doordarshan plays and telefilms also. A few of them include - Sukh, Aparichita, Uttaradhikar, Bikalpa, Sukher Jonne, Prasab and Bhanga Aiyna. She started acting in movies in the year 1985. She received National Film Award for Best Lyrics for Chandaneer in 1990, proving her versatility in writing field too. Currently, she is a member of the Central Board of Film Certification.

 

Satarupa Sanyal was born on November 12, 1962 as the daughter of Professor Tarun Sanyal and Keya Sanyal, in Burdwan, West Bengal. She is their eldest daughter. She did her schooling from St. Margaret's School in Kolkata, and later attended the Scottish Church College. Her acting career started in the year 1985. But later she switched on to other sections, including music and movie making. Later she made feature films as well as documentaries, for which she composed music herself.

 

Her documentary films include - Surer Guru - A Documentary Film of Jamini Ganguly (1985), Treasures of Gorumara, Jaley Jangaley Jiban, Festival & Festivities of Bengal, M Madhusudan Dutta, Rathyatra and Jhanpan Utsav and Jiboner Jalshaghorey. Her feature films are Anu (1998), Atatayee (2000), Tanyabi's Lake (2002) and Kalo Cheetah (2004). She has also directed a few telefilms that have been telecasted in Akash Bangla, Zee Bangla, Doordarshan Kolkata, ETV Bangla and a few more television channels. She has also published a few collection of poems. Kanya phire jaa and Dukkhosakha. She was awarded ‘Soviet land magazine’ in the year 1981, for the poem, Lenin.
