Satabdi Roy Biography

Satabdi Roy is a Bengali film actress, film director and politician. She currently serves as a parliamentarian in the 17th Lok Sabha, and it’s her third term. She is affiliated to All India Trinamool Congress and represents Birbhum constituency. She has won from the same constituency on a Trinamool Congress ticket in 2014 and 2009. As a Bengali actress she ruled silver screen in the 1980s and 1990s. Atanka, Antardhan, Amar Bandhan, Antaranga, Abishkar and Alingan are some of her major works. She received BFJA Award for best supporting actress for Atanka in 1987 and Debipaksha in 2005. She acted in two Hindi movies in the 1990s - Naya Zaher and Mulaquat.

 

Satabdi Roy was born on 5 October 1969 in Agarpara, West Bengal. Roy made her film debut opposite Prosenjit Chatterjee in Tapan Sinha's Atanka (1986) in a supporting role. The role is still known to be one of her career best roles, and it also helped her to bag BFJA Award for best supporting actress. Her pairing with Tapas Paul was well received and they delivered back to back hits. Amar Bandhan (1986), Guru Dakshina (1987), Antaranga (1988), Apan Amar Apan (1990) and Abishkar (1990) are some of their major works together.

 

She was successfully paired with popular actor Prosenjit Chatterjee for the movies, Alingan (1990), Shraddhanjali (1993), Lathi (1996), Sakhi Tumi Kar (1996), Chandragrahan (1997), Ranokhetro (1998), Sajani Aamar Sohag (2000) and Trishul (2000). She made her directorial debut with Abhinetri (2005), which was loosely inspired with the life of Suchitra Sen. But the movie flopped at box office. As an actress Bizli (2018) marked her glorious comeback. She teaches at Satabdi Foundation during her leisure time.
