Sashi Kumar Biography

Sashi Kumar is a prominent journalist from Kerala and founder of India’s first regional satellite TV channel Asianet in the year 1992. Now Asianet is the most popular Malayalam channel and has started functioning in other languages. It was Sashi who suggested the name Asiantet to Kerala’s first private channel. He is the founder chairman of the Media Development Foundation, which set up and runs the prestigious Asian College of Journalism in Chennai. He was the first West Asia correspondent of The Hindu in 1980’s. He has a short stint in film industry as well. He has directed one Hindi movie, Kaya Taran and has played lead role of Anand Menon, an astrophysicist, aside Mammootty in critically well-acclaimed Malayalam movie – Loud Speaker (2009).

 

Sashi Kumar was born at Karoopadanna near Kodungallur in Thrissur District. He took graduation from Loyola College, and took post-graduation in history from Madras Christian College. Later he started his career in Thiruvananthapuram Doordarshan as a newsreader and producer. Later he joined PTI-TV as chief producer and became its general manager. He presented and scripted programs like Money Matters, Tana Bana and Jan Manch, based on Indian politics and economics. In 2003, he directed one movie, Kaya Taran based on the short story “When Big Trees Fall” written by N.S Madhavan which won G. Aravindan award as the best debut film maker (2004).

 

He acted in two Malayalam movies, Loud speaker and Iniyum Marichittillatha Nammal. He became immensely popular through the role of Anand Menon, kidney ailing patient in Loud Speaker. The song, Alliyampal kadavil of old Malayalam movie, Rossy, pictured on him became immensely popular. In 2007, he won Vijayaraghavan Memorial Award for contribution to journalism.
