Sarup Singh Biography 
Dr. Sarup Singh was an academician and politician from Delhi. Known as an eminent professor, he served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi. He was associated with Lok Dal party. He was member of the Rajya Sabha from Haryana (1978-1984). He also served as governor of Kerala for a brief period in 1990, followed by Gujarat during 1990-1995. He lived during the period 9 January 1917 - 4 August 2003. His name is also addressed as Swaroop Singh. He remained the first Head of English Department of University of Kurukshetra, and after his death 'Dr Sarup Singh Chair' was created in the university in his honour.
Swaroop Singh hailed from Rohtak district in Haryana. Sanghi was his village, where he was born in 1917. His primary education was completed from his native village, followed by matriculation from Punjab University in 1934. Later he completed his graduation and post-graduation in English language before he started his professional career as a lecturer at Hindu College, University of Delhi in 1940. In 1951 he moved to London. He joined University College, London, and received his Ph.D. in English Literature in 1953. Once the completion of his research work, he returned to Hindu College where he resumed his professional career.
He was appointed Vice-Principal of Kirori Mal College very soon and later got promoted to Principal of the college in 1957. Four years later he became the first HOD of English department when it was newly established in University of Kurukshetra. In 1965, he became Professor and Head of the Department of English in the University of Delhi, followed by Vice-Chancellor of the University in 1971. He was also a member of UPSC during 1975-1978, before he joined politics in 1978. He became a member of Rajya Sabha in 1978.
