Sarita Joshi Biography

Sarita Joshi is a veteran theatre artist and established television actress. She also works in Hindi and Marathi films in supporting roles. Her husband Praveen Joshi is a stage director and both her daughters, Ketki Dave and Puvi Joshi are well established stars of small screen. She is best known for hit serial Baa Bahoo Aur Baby of Star Plus. She played supporting roles in Bollywood movies like Guru, Dasvidaniya and Gangoobai. She is known for portraying mother/grandmother roles on small and big screen. Actor Sharman Joshi of 3 Idiots fame is her nephew. In 1988, she was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting in Gujarati dramas. Her most popular role of small screen, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby has fetched her Best Actress in a Drama award by the IDEA Indian Television Academy Awards. She has also been honoured with numerous awards for her significant contributions to Indian Art.

 

Sarita was born in a middle class Gujarati family in Pune on October 17, 1941. She started acting at the age of 9 to financially support her family. Her family owned a traditional theatre also. She played her first lead role at the age of 16. Then she became a part of Indian National Theatre, where she met Pravin Joshi. Later they got married. She debut television in 1980 with Doordarshan serial, Titliyaan. Hasretein is one of her popular works.

 

However, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby placed her name among the established actors of small town. Though the show was called off in 2009, it returned back owing to its public demand. Kuchh Kook Hota Hai of 9X channel is another noted work. For her contributions to Gujarati theatre, she has received numerous honours including - Lifetime Achievement Award for Gujarati Theatre in 2007 by Transmedia, Marathi Natya Parishad in 1988, Maharashtra Gaurav in 1990 and Indo-American Society Award for Excellence in 1998. She won favourite actor award of Star Parivar continuously for 4 years.
