Saraswati Saha Biography

Saraswati Saha is an Indian athlete, track and field sprinter from West Bengal. She holds the current 200 metres national record of 22.82 seconds set at the National Circuit. She achieved this feat Athletic Meet held in Ludhiana on 28 August 2002, which was previously held by Rachita Mistry, a 2-year old record. She was also a team member along with P. T. Usha, E. B. Shyla, and Rachita Mistry, who won gold at 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1998 Asian Championships in Athletics, setting a new national record of 44.43 s. In 2000 Asia Championships held at Jakarta, Indonesia, she won silver for 100 meter event. In 2002, she was conferred the Arjuna Award for her contribution towards the field of Indian athletics.

 

Saraswati Dey-Saha was born on 23 November 1979 in Manurmukh, Belonia, Tripura. She works in eastern railways, in government sector. While working with railways, she has participated in many of her competitions. After marriage, she was coached by her husband Amit Saha. She was also trained by Parminder Singh during her active years. She retired from active career during her prime years in year 2006. "No more athletics," said Saha. Persistent heel and tendon injuries hampered her training. Apparently, the recurrence of injury made her decision much earlier. Medical experts had advised surgery, but she opted out.

 

Saha began her athletics career in 1990. She won her first national level medal the year after, and in 1995 she made her international debut. She was a member of 4 x 100 metres relay team at the 1998 Asian Championships which won gold with a national record. At 23, she did her country proud by winning the 200 m title at the Busan Asian Games.
