Sapna Awasthi Biography

Sapna Awasthi is a very popular folk singer of India. She has sung a few blockbuster hits for Bollywood as well. Up to date, her biggest hits of Bollywood are Chayya Chayya of Dil se (1998) in A.R.Rehman’s composition and the top song of year 1996 ‘Pardesi pardesi jaana nahi’ of Raja Hindustani in Nadeem Shravan’s composition. As Pardesi song also belongs to Alka Yagnik, it can be said that Chayya Chayya is the biggest song of her singing career. She is a trained classical singer who sings folk songs most. She has also sung for Assamese, Rajasthani, Nepali and Telugu. When a music composer thinks about a folk song in female voice, Sapna’s voice is always mentioned first.

Sapna Awasthi was born in Kumaon and her voice fully reflects her natural voice to capture folk tales and stories. Her singing style and voice are quite similar to Ila Arun and both these ladies have given new definitions to Hindi playback singing. Both of these folk singers proved that unusual rough voice can also be used for singing tunes. Though Sapna has sung only a few songs, all those songs are always remembered for its unique style and singing voice.

Born in Kumaon, Sapna was relocated to Mumbai when she became successful in singing songs of super hit movie Krantiveer in 1994. Jai Ambe Jagdambe was the song that she sung for Krantiveer. In 1995, she sung the super hit song Banno Teri Ankhiyaan for Sunny Deol Manisha Koirala starrer Dushmani. In 1996, she sang the song, Pardesi pardesi along with Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. In 1998, came the biggest hit of Sapna’s career – Chayya Chayya and she sang this full lengthy song along with Sukhwinder singh. Her unique voice well matched Mallika Arora’s dancing steps and again, this song was the top song of the year. Though her voice has been successfully used in many songs, she mostly gets second chance. Songs like Chamma Chamma of China Gate, Bachke Tu Rehna Re of Company and Pardesi of Raja Hindustani belong to this genre. Songs of Dushmani and Dil se were enough to bring out her real caliber.

Her other big hits are Sab kuch bhula diya of Hum tumhare hain sanam, Dilwalom ka dil ka of Shool, Lal garara of Badal, Kata kata of Raavan and Dulhan banoo mein teri title track. She has also done remixed version of old hit song – Kajra mohabbatwaala.
