Santu Mukhopadhyay Biography

Santu Mukhopadhyay is a veteran actor associated with Bengali cinema. He is associated with film scene since mid1970s. Noted film actress Swastika Mukherjee and film actor Sumanta Mukherjee are his children. Santu started his film journey working with the highly acclaimed directors like Tarun Majumdar and Tapan Sinha in the 1970s, though he acted in all types of movies later. He received his first break to films in the year 1975 and it was given by renowned director Tapan Sinha. Raja in 1975 marked his film debut, followed by Sansar Simante directed by Tarun Majumdar. In the recent times he also worked with television shows such as Ishti Kutum and Jol Nupur, both on STAR Jalsha.

Santu Mukhopadhyay was born on January 17, 1951 in Kolkata, West Bengal. His schooling was done at Mitra Institution at Bhowanipore. He completed his higher secondary education from Padmapukur Institution at Sarat Bose Road. Later he dropped his studies to become fully active with the entertainment world. He got attached to theater and acting. He took dance lessons from Gopal Bhattacharya and also learnt Rabindra Sangeet from Gitobitan to pursue a career in the cine biz. In hope to get a break to film industry he met the famous film director Tapan Sinha. Tapan Sinha gave him his first break in his movie “Raja”. After association with offbeat movies for a while, he returned to theatre once again.

He made a comeback through commercial ventures and fully active in Bengali film scene since then. He got married in 1979 and had two children, both following the same field. Some of his recent films include - Sweet Heart, E Sudhu Aamar Gaan, Jaal, Aamio Nebo Challenge, Ganyer Meye Sovona, Target etc. He currently plays father type of roles on silver screen.
