Sanju Surendran Biography

Sanju Surendran is an award winning filmmaker from Malayalam film industry. After marking his career in the field of short films and documentaries, he marked his directorial debut with 2018 Malayalam feature film, Aedan- Garden of Desire. The movie bagged Rajathachakoram award for the best debut director and the FIPRESCI award for the best Malayalam film. His documentary film, Kapila is a recipient of multiple awards including National Award for the Best Documentary [Arts and Culture], Special Mention at Visions du Reel Switzerland, IDPA Gold Medal for Best Documentary, FIPRESCI and Rajathachakoram, Special Mention at International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala IDSFFK 2015 and Best Documentary Film at SIGNS 2015.


Sanju Surendran hails from Thrissur, Kerala. He is a graduate of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He got opportunity to learn under Mani Kaul, a leading Indian name of parallel cinema. After completing his course from FTII, he taught for a brief period at KR Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts, Kottayam. He also started making documentaries and short films in Hindi, Malayalam and English languages.


In 2003, he made his first documentary film in Malayalam language - Kandal Pokkudan, based on an ecological activist Pokkudan and his life. He made his first Malayalam short film, Theeram in 2007. He has already done Hindi short films – Pratibimb, Nisha etc and a few documentaries in the same language too. Many of his short films and documentaries dealt with social issues. Kapila is his award winning documentary film, based on Kutiyattam. Aedan- Garden of Desire is his debut feature film, which bagged two awards at the International Film Festival of Kerala, and four Kerala state awards.
