Sanjiv Bhatt Biography

Sanjiv Bhatt is an Indian Police Service officer from Gujarat. He came to limelight when he played an important role in filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court of India against Narendra Modi, who was then serving as state CM. The filing was related to Modi's alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots, which tarnished his public image a lot. Later Bhatt did not attend this meeting, and Supreme Court dismissed his allegations. In 2015 he was removed from service, on the ground of "unauthorized absence". On September 5, 2018 he was taken into custody over a 1998 case relating to falsely framing a lawyer in a criminal case.

 

Sanjiv Bhatt was born in Mumbai on 21 December 1963. He hails from Gujarat. He completed M. Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1985 before joining Indian Police Service. He joined IPS 3 years later in 1988. He remained a controversial leader in his police service. Several police cases have been registered against him in the 1990s. In 1990, following a riot in Jamnagar district which took 150 lives, police detained many. When one of them died a few days later, FIR was lodged against Bhatt and six other policemen for torturing which led to his death. He was accused in another custodial torture case in 1998.

 

In 1996 while serving as Superintendent of Police of Banaskantha district, he was accused of falsely framing a lawyer in a narcotics case. It was accused that he maliciously filed nearly 40 petitions in different courts. On September 5, 2018 he was taken into custody for this case. He worked as Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence in the State Intelligence Bureau at Gandhinagar during 1999-2002.

 

The following year Bhatt was posted as the superintendent of Sabarmati central jail, where he became popular for many reforms. Very soon he was transferred for being too friendly with the prisoners. Because of the pending criminal cases against him, Bhatt had stayed at the SP level for a decade without any promotion.
