Sanjib Chattopadhyay Biography

Sanjib Chattopadhyay, also pronounced as Sanjeev Chattopadhyay is a well-known Bengali short story writer and novelist. He writes satire one-liners for his works for which he is popular. Sanjib is a recipient of numerous literary honours including Ananda Puraskar in 1981 for his overall contributions to Bengali literature. The Library of Congress has forty three titles by him. Swetpatharer tebil is his most popular novella. Lotakambal and Shakha Prasakha are among his major novels. He draws characters for his novels from middle-class families of Kolkata. Most of his novels included characters belonging to this city as well. He was born and brought up in Kolkata.

 

Sanjib was born in Kolkata on February 28, 1936. He spent his childhood days in Chota Nagpur Plateau, a hilly area. He lost his mother at the age of 5 and since then he was brought up by his father. While studying at class 7, his family relocated to Kolkata where he continued with his studies. He completed graduation in Chemistry from Scottish Church College, Kolkata.

 

As a writer he excelled in humorous fiction. The plots of his fiction works set amidst Kolkata families give a realistic effect to his readers. His use of short satirical sentences mixed with frequent English words make his distinct among satire writers of Bengali language. Roshe Boshe, Sheuli, Duti Chair, Besh Achhi Roshe Boshe, Tumi Aar Aami, Eke Eke, Kolkata Achhe Kolkatatei, Parampadokamale, Cancer, Rakish Maa Roshe Boshe, Mapa Hashi Chapa Kanna and Halka Hashi Chokher Jol are among his major works. Lotakambal – is most popular among his creations. He frequently used old men as protagonists for his stories - Lotakambala and Shakha Prasakha, being the best instances.
