Sanjay Surkar Biography

Sanjay Surkar was a National award winning film director of Marathi cinema. He has won National award for best regional film in Marathi three times. The movies are Rao Saheb (1996), Tu Tithe Mee (1998) and Gharabaher (1999). Apart from being a successful director, he works for television and theatre also.

Surkar Surkar was born on 19 August 1949 at Deoli in Wardha of Maharashtra. He started his career through theatre from his school and college days. Surkar along with actor Girish Oak and Pramod Bhusari conducted various workshops while studying BA at Nagpur. Later he moved to Mumbai where he produced commercial plays like Chafa Bolena, Preetisangam and Tu Fakta Ho Mhan. He was first introduced to television through the serial No Problem and later moved to films. In 1989, he started her career as an assistant director. The first movie was Kalat Nakat, directed by Kanchan Nayak. This movie won National award for best film in regional category. The movie was produced by Smita Talwalkar and thus began the successful beginning of this partnership.

In 1991, he directed his first movie, Chaukat raja produced by Smita Talwalkar. In 1992 he received Maharashtra State Film Award for Best Film to Aaplee Maanse. The movie was noticed and won many state awards. In 1993 when Smita Talwalkar produced her first directorial venture Sawat Mazhi Ladki, Surkar assisted her in direction. In 1993, his third movie was released - Aaplee Maanse, a family drama, followed by Yadna the next year. Rao Saheb (1996), Tu Tithe Mee (1998) and Gharabaher (1999) are the best movies of this director’s career which won National awards. Other works include - Aai Shappath..!, Anandache Jhaad, Gharabaher and Saatchya Aat Gharat. He has also produced a few TV shows like Dhoondh Legi Manzil Humein and Aapki Antara.
