Sanjay Subrahmanyan (vocalist) Biography

Sanjay Subrahmanyan is a leading Carnatic vocalist of present times. He is the latest recipient of Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 2015 awarded by Madras Music Academy for his contributions to the field of Carnatic music. He is also a recipient of Kalaimamani award given from the Tamil Nadu Government for the year 2006. Apart from India, Sanjay is known for his performances abroad in many countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, US, Canada, UK, Switzerland and Oman. He is an 'A Top' Grade artiste of All India Radio, Chennai.

 

He was born in Chennai in 1968. He was initiated to the world of classical music at the age of 7 and received initial training from V. Lakshminarayana, who trained him in Carnatic music and violin. Later he completely switched over to vocal music and trained under Rukmini Rajagopalan for 8 years, followed by Calcutta K. S. Krishnamurthy for 10 years. By that time though he established himself as a leading vocalist, he didn’t stop learning and continued his training till the year 2013. He received vocal training from S. R. D. Vaidyanathan until his demise. He is also an eminent teacher who has many students. He is a chartered accountant by profession and a rank holder from Cost Accountant.

 

Earned appreciation at a younger age, he is a recipient of numerous awards including Tamil Nadu’s highest recognition in art - Kalaimamani award. He regularly performs for radio also. He won first prize in the All India Radio competition held in 1985. He is a recipient of titles such as "Gaana Padhmam", "Vani-kala-sudhakara", "Isai Peroli", “Sangeetha Kalasarathy” etc given by different organizations associated with art.
