Sanjay Singh (activist) Biography

Sanjay Singh is an Indian politician associated with AAP. He is also an activist. He is currently a national spokesperson and current Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party since January 2018. As an activist he is best known for apolitical campaigns from the ‘Right to Information’ campaign in 2006 to the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare. He is the mentor of many leading politicians of AAP like Himmat Singh Shergill.

 

Sanjay Singh was born in Sultanpur of Uttar Pradesh into a Rajput family. Both his parents were teachers. Sanjay took diploma in Mining Engineering from Orissa School of Mining Engineering in Keonjhar. However he was not interested in regular job spending most of the time in office. He has been drawn towards social activities, inspired by the likes of great Indian freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi and started Azad Samaj Seva Samiti in Sultanpur in 1994. During his initial days in social work, he worked most on blood donation camps and health camps for the poor sectors of the society. Later his organization merged with National Hawkers’ Association.

 

As a social activist he has led many movements for the benefits of poor, anti-corruption etc. Singh was involved in a 16-year struggle for the rights of the street vendors in UP. He joined active politics soon after Aam Aadmi party was formed in 2012, and currently fully engaged in the political scene in Uttar pradesh. He has been one of the early members of the party since its inception. He was involved in a movement to clean the Gomti River by labour gift.
