Sanjay Manjrekar Biography

Sanjay Manjrekar is a former batman of Indian Cricket team. He played international cricket for India as a right-handed middle order batsman from 1987 until 1996. He is known for her technically correct bating style and has also occasionally done wicket keeper’s job. He is the son of Vijay Manjrekar, great test player of India during 1950’s and 1960’s. He has scored 2043 runs from 37 test matches at an average of 37.14 and has also scored 1994 runs from 74 ODI at a batting average of 33.23.

 

Sanjay Vijay Manjrekar was born in Mangalore on 12 July 1965. As a school boy, he competed in the Cooch Behar Trophy between 1978 and 1982. While studying at Bombay University, he batted in Vizzy Trophy and the Rohinton Baria Trophy between 1983 and 1985. He was able to win both in 1985, with West Zone Universities and Bombay University respectively. His first-class cricket debut with Ranji Trophy on 7 March 1985, scoring 57 runs in the only match he got opportunity to play in the series. It was the quarter-final match where his team won against Haryana. During 1985-86 season he was in a steady form with batting average of 42.4. In the next season, he scored his first century during the first innings of a match against Baroda and remained not out. He scored his first double century for West Zone in October 1987, scoring 278 runs. But unfortunately he was run out.

 

In 1987, he made his international debut at Delhi. In this first test match against West Indies, he managed to score only 5 runs in the first innings. In the second innings, he retired hurt when only 10 runs in his account. He scored his first half century against New Zealand in an ODI in 1988. His first century was scored against West Indies the same year. Very soon he became one of the top batsmen of the Indian team. He scored his final international century against Zimbabwe in October 1992 in attest match and retired from international matches in 1996. Yet he is active behind screen in a commentator’s job.
