Sanjana Kapoor Biography

Sanjana Kapoor is a well-known theatre personality and Indian actress. She is a part of great Kapoor family of Bollywood. Born as the daughter of Shashi Kapoor and British actress Jennifer Kendal, she became the granddaughter of Pritviraj Kapoor. She is the niece of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. Her brothers Karan Kapoor and Kunal Kapoor are former models/actors. Karan Kapoor too, has worked in movies though not successful. Sanjana was first married to Aditya Bhattacharya, grandson of Bollywood great director Bimal Roy and son of film director Basu Bhattacharya and Rinki (writer). After divorce she married Valmik Thapar, a natural historian and tiger conservationist. She has been associated with Prithvi Theatre at Mumbai for a long time, founded by her grandfather. She successfully ran the theater during the period, 1993 - 2012 February.

 

Sanjana was born as a member of the famous Bollywood family, the Kapoors in 1967 as the daughter of Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal, the sister of British actress Felicity Kendal. Her schooling was done at prestigious Bombay International School in Mumbai. From early days, she had love with theatre and has been associated with Pritvi theaters as an actress. She was the first woman in the Kapoor family to act in Bollywood movies. She debut with 36 Chowringhee Lane where she played the younger role of her real mother, Jennifer Kendal. The movie was produced by her father. She also acted in Utsav (1984) also produced by her father. She played lead role opposite Naseeruddin Shah in Hero Herolal, but the movie flopped. She also appeared in Salaam Bombay in 1988 and Aranyaka (1994).

 

Her film career was not successful and her attention turned to theatre. Apart from Pritvi theatre, she runs theater workshops for children. In 2011, she announced her decision to leave Prithvi Theatre, and launched her own theatre company, Junoon in 2012.
