Sangeetha Katti Biography

Sangeetha Katti is a Hindustani classical vocalist from the state of Karnataka. She hails from Dharwad and is currently based in Bangalore. She is a recipient of numerous prestigious honours including Suvarna Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 2006-2007, the highest civilian award of Karnataka. She has been active in musical concerts since early 1980s and has also done playback singing. The evergreen songs - Ee Hasiru Siriyali and Kambada Myalina Bombeye of Kannada movie, Nagamandala are still popular. Bhajans, Vachanas, Dasavani, Abhangs, Bhavageet, Folk Music etc are other variations of her musical renditions. She was blessed to take musical lessons from legendary music composer Naushad, who also identified her hidden talent.

 

Sangeeta Katti was born in Dharwad, Karnataka to Dr. H. A. Katti and Bharati Katti. She was born on the Saraswati Pooja day of Dussehra. She is versed in Kannada, Hindi, English and Marathi languages. She graduated in Chemistry. Born into a family of musicians, she was initiated to the world of music at the age of four by her father. Almost at the same time, her meeting with Bollywood music composer Naushad proved to be a turning point of her life. During her first public concert at the age of four, he sat beside her and asked her to sing some ragas and she impressed him also. Very soon he accepted her as his student.

 

She also trained under Sheshagiri Dandapur and Pt. Chanderashekhar Puranikmath followed by Padmabhushan Pt. Basavaraj Rajguru of Kirana & Gwalior Gharana for about 12 years. She is presently a student of Kishori Amonkar of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana. In a career spanning to more than 4 decades, she has already done more than 5000 music concerts, apart from rendering songs for movies.
