Sandhya Sanjana Biography

Sandhya Sanjana is one of the leading Indian singers who sings in English. She is popular for singing western contemporary style numbers along with a fusion of Indian with West. She often includes rock and jass type of western styles in Indian classical and contemporary style of music. Apart from singing career, she has been associated with as one of its earliest artists. She has given her voice to many game tracks too.


Her maiden name is Sandhya Golikeri and she was born in Mumbai. Her mother Shaila Golikeri is a trained vocalist and performer of All India Radio, who taught Sandhya first lessons of music. As her mother was working she moved to Delhi where she was raised by her uncle and aunt. It was her uncle who encouraged her a lot and gave her opportunities to perform in stages which includes both pop and devotional songs. At the age of 7, she took formal learning in Hindustani music from Maitrayini Mundkur. A children’s programme on Radio Ceylon was one of her earliest performances as a child artist. She also actively participated in many singing contests which gave her acclamations. She continued learning Hindustani music from Sita Hirebet, an exponent of the Kirana gharana. She also learnt under Shashikala Kaikini of the Agra gharana and Pt. Govind Prasad Jaipurwale.


Though she concentrated her learning to Hindustani vocal music, she started performing in western contemporary style as well. She has been associated with several music bands and along with Dinshah Sanjana she started a fusion group named Divya which was one of the earliest fusion bands combining Indian elements with western. In 1998, they got separated. She married in 1999 and then on, started her solo career.
