Sandhya Roy Biography

Sandhya Roy is a veteran actress of Bengal cinema. She has appeared in a few Hindi movies also. She is one among the foremost actresses who was most popular in romantic roles during 1960’s and 1970’s. She was married to veteran film maker of Bengali cinema, Tarun Majumder and the couple has now separated. They fell in love during the shooting of Palatak and got married on 21st July, 1967. She is widely acknowledged for her great acting skills and sweet and cherubic face from 1960 to 1985. Later too, she experimented with her acting talents to do some powerful roles in supporting leads. Her most memorable roles include - Satyajit Ray's Ashani Sanket, Tarun Majumdar's 'Thagini', Manihar, Kuheli, Baba tharaq naath and a few more. In Kuheli she played double role. Her Hindi movies include - Asli Naqli, Bandhan and Jaane anjane. She has worked in more than 400 movies in her career.

Sandhya Roy was born in Nabadwip, West Bengal, but later moved to Bangladesh. She was born in a temple at Pora Ma Tala, Nabadwip. She lost her parents at a younger age and had to discontinue her education. Her grandfather was a landlord in Bangladesh. She went to her maternal uncle’s home Jossore of Bangladesh where she had her early education. In 1957, she returned back to India. She stayed with her sister in law Jatindra Kishore Roy. Her career in movies started with a bit role "Mamlar fol". When she was only ten, she went to watch a shooting at Radha studio with her friends. Director spot her and gave a role as a part of the "crowd" in a "crowd-scene"!

Then she was offered a small role in "Antariksha" by director Rajen Tarafdar where she got 150 rupees per day. Later she became a part of Bengali film history. Her first successful films include - Brindabon Leela", "Nagini Kanyar Kahini" and "Ganga". It was the movie, "Gamli Panchi" that gave her instant fame. Yet it took years to place Sandhya as the romantic heroine of Bengali cinema. It happened with the movie, Maya Mriga where she was casted opposite Biswajith, thus marking the beginning of association of one of the leading pairs of Bengali cinema – Biswajith and Sandhya.
