Samir Ganguly Biography

Samir Ganguly is a highly respected and experienced film maker of Bollywood. Sharmilee, Shagird, Deewaangi, Koi Jeeta Koi Haara, Khoon Ka Rishta, Anjaane Mein, and Pakhandi are his classic hits. He has experimented with all genres of film making and tasted success as well. ‘Paying guest’ is his highly acclaimed television serial as a serial director.

Sharmilee and Shagird are best among his all directorial ventures and still remembered for the themes as well as classic music. In fact the classic comedy, Shagird has inspired many Indian film makers to make movies with same plot. The music of Laxmikant-Pyarelal was the highlight of the movie, apart from the realistic and acclaimed performances of Joy Mukherjee, Saira Banu and I. S. Johar. The hit song "Dil Wil Pyar Wyar" sung by Lata Mangeshkar topped the Binaca Geetmala 1968 annual list.

Samir started his career as an assistant to various Bollywood directors and has become a part of several Hindi classic hits like 'Tumsa Nahin Dekha', 'Bluff Master', 'Champakali', 'Love Marriage', 'Junglee' and 'April Fool'. The movie Shagird brought this director to limelight within a short time. It was followed by 1971 hit Sharmilee which starred Shashi Kapoor and Raakhee Gulzar in lead roles. This movie is one among the best solo hits of Kapoor and it also placed Raakhee in a traditional as well as glamourous look. Raakhee played double role in this movie and all songs, composed by S. D. Burman were chartbusters. The title track, Khilte hai gul yaha, Megha chaye, Aaj madhosh ya Reshmi Ujala Hai, all songs belonging to different genres mesmerize music lovers till now.

Though he has directed a few more movies, he is still remembered for Shagird and Sharmilee. He has also co-scripted Hema Malini – Shashi Kapoor starrer Abhinetri in 1970.
