Salman Khurshid Biography

Salman Khurshid is an Indian politician who serves as the Cabinet Minister of the Ministry of External Affairs. He is a member of the Indian National Congress party. He was elected from the Farrukhabad Lok Sabha constituency in 2009 elections.

 

Salman Khurshid was born on 1st January 1953 in Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. His father Khurshed Alam Khan served as the Union Minister of External Affairs in the Government of India. The third President of India, Zakir Hussain was his maternal grandfather. He completed his schooling at St. Xavier’s High School at Patna in Bihar. Then he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Jurisprudence and then M.A and B.C.L. degrees. He studied at St. Stephen’s College at Delhi and at St. Edmund Hall at Oxford University of U.K.

 

He started his career as lecturer in law at Trinity College at Oxford. He entered politics as an officer on special duty in the Prime Minister’s office during the time of Indira Gandhi. Then he became the deputy Minister of Commerce and from 1991 to 1996, he served as the Minister of State for External Affairs. He married Louise Khurshid.

 

He was elected as the Member of Parliament from Farrukhabad constituency in 1991 and 2009 general elections. He was made as the Cabinet Minister for Law and Justice and Minority Affairs in the Government of India. He served as the President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee two times and as the President of the Delhi Public School Society.

 

He has also penned many works including the play Sons of Babur and he with his wife runs the Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust for physically challenged people.
