Salman Akhtar Biography 
Salman Akhtar is a psychoanalyst practicing in the United States. He is of Indian origin, with roots in the famous Akhtar filmy family, with many members related to Urdu poetry, literature and Hindi films. He is the son of famous Urdu poet and lyricist, Jan Nisar Akhtar and his second wife Safia Akhtar – a teacher who has authored two books. His brother Javed Akhtar is an ace lyricist and screenwriter associated with Hindi cinema since 1970s, and his son Kabir Akhtar is an American television director and Emmy-nominated editor. In 1999 he authored the book, Immigration and Identity.
Salman Akhtar was born into a family of literals and intellectuals, which many generations exclusively associated with Urdu poetry. His grandfather Muztar Khairabadi, his father Jan Nisar Akhtar and his forefathers like Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi, Abdul Haque etc were either Urdu writers, religious scholars or both. He is the paternal uncle of Farhan Akhtar & Zoya Akhtar, related to Bollywood cinema. Salman is an author too, who has published more than 300 works including 12 books, mostly related to medicine and Psychoanalysis.
Salman Akhtar was born on 31 July 1946, Uttar Pradesh. He currently serves as Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his M.D. at Aligarh Muslim University's Medical School, and after interim he moved to US in 1973. He received psychiatric training at the University of Virginia Medical Center, and also psychoanalytic training from the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Institute. Later he joined Psychiatry & Human Behavior at Jefferson Medical College, where he serves as a professor now. He is also associated with Jefferson University Hospital as psychiatrist, and also Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia as a trainer and supervisor.
