Salma Agha Biography

Salma Agha is remembered for her role in Nikaah and the song, ‘Dil ke armaan aasuvom mein’. Though she is a Pakistani, she has given significant contributions to Bollywood and she is most known for her typical and variety voice. Songs like, ‘Mera naam Salma’, ‘Dil ke armaan’ and ‘Dil Ki Ye Aarzoo Thi Koi Dilruba Mile’ still attract a lot of fans all over India. She has done a few movies during 80’s, yet she is remembered most for her role in Nikaah as a Muslim wife clenched in between two men and divorce (talaaq) rules of Islam. This movie is always regarded as a classic and she was paired opposite Raj Babbar and Deepak Parashaar. She did playback singing too, for all songs and all did exceptionally well too. Faza Bhi Hai Jawa Jawa, Hava Bhi Hai was another hit song of this movie, nominated for Filmfare. She won her single Filmfare award for Ravi’s composition ‘Dil ke armaan aasuvom mein’. Not only that, she won a Filmfare nomination for best actress too, though she couldn’t win it. Her daughter Sashaa Agha was debut Bollywood with Aurengazeb in 2013.

 

Salma Agha was born in London to Pakistani parents in the year 1956. Her entire family is settled in London and she belonged to the third generation of actors of her family. The Urdu album, Abba and Agga, she sang along with her sister Sabina was popular during her early days. It was just coincidental that she bagged roles of Raj Kapoor’s Henna and B.R.Chopra’s Nikah. As B.R.Chopra was searching for a Muslim girl with traditional looks, she was accepted. Raj Kapoor is Salma Agha’s distant relative. Rishi Kapoor – Neethu Singh’s wedding reception at London, where she was residing that time, opened her doors to Bollywood.

 

Her second released movie was ‘Kasam paida karne wale ki’, along with Mithun Chakravorthy and Smita Patel. She changed her looks as well as singing style for this movie. The rocking song, ‘Jhoom jhoom jhoom baba’ was a huge hit and she won Filmfare nomination as well. 80’s was an era of disco tracks and her publicity too, helped the movie to earn big at box office.
