Sakthi T. K. Krishnasamy Biography

Sakthi T. K. Krishnasamy was a noted Tamil writer from 1950’s to 1970’s. He wrote stories, screenplay and dialogue for films starring top two heroes of the time, M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan. His screenplays were chosen with historical, mythological and social life as main subjects. He was considered as one of the best film script writers of Tamil Cinema and most noted works are Veerapandiya Kattabomman and Karnan, both being Sivaji Ganesan movies. His playwrights and work as a dramatist worth special mention. Noted film actors like Sivaji Ganesan, M. N. Nambiar, V. K. Ramasamy, S. V. Subbiah and A. P. Nagarajan had worked in his drama troupe - Sakthi Nataka Sabha before entering movies.

 

Sakthi’s writing career started with playwrights. He wrote plays for his own drama troupe called Sakthi Nataka Sabha. His first play was staged at the Nagapattinam Baby Theatre and later on, through his works became a prominent figure. Bhayankari and Vidhi are among his earliest works. He was one of the earliest to have three different stages set up. His most popular play was Kaviyin Kanavu. His Sakthi Nataka Sabha and its stage plays were such a huge hit that Railways ran a “Sakthi” special from Trichy to Nagapattinam and Trichy to Kumbakonam when they were staged. His troupe consisted of 60 members. Actor M. N. Nambiar got a break to movies when one of his roles as a stage actor impressed a film producer.

 

Veerapandiya Kattabomman was first written as a stage play in 1957. It became commercially successful all over Tamil Nadu and two years later, it was made to a feature film with Sivaji ganesan in main lead. The film won awards in the Second Afro-Asian Film Festival at Cairo (1960) for best acting, music and a special jury award. Still now, its dialogues are very popular.
