Sakharam Arjun Biography

Sakharam Arjun was an eminent physician and social activist from Mumbai, who lived in the 19th century during the period, 1839-16 April 1885. He married a widow Jayantibai, and was the step-father of the popular woman physician Rukhmabai. He co-founded Bombay Natural History Society, one of the largest non-governmental organisations in India engaged in conservation and biodiversity research. Social reformer Atmaram Pandurang was its co-founder. In official documents, his name is Sakharam Arjun Ravut.

 

Sakharam Arjun Ravut didn’t use his caste surname in publications, and his name is credited as Sakharam Arjun. He studied at Elphinstone Institution and then joined Grant Medical College as a Stipendiary Student in 1858. Narayan Daji, brother of Bhau Daji was his tutor. After completing his medical studies, he became the first Indian to teach medical botany and worked as an assistant in William Guyer Hunter. He worked at the Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy Hospital. He also conducted experiments on the therapeutic value of oils like chaulmoogra and cashew nut in the treatment of leprosy.

 

Sakharam Arjun published medical articles in different journals, and Vaidyatatva (1869), Garbhavidya va Prasutikaran (1873), Vivahavidnyan (1877) etc are among his published books. He married twice, and for the second time he married a widow, which was not common those days. He died on 16 April 1885. He was survived by his second wife, and three sons from his first marriage. He left a will whereby he bequeathed his estate to his widow Rewabai. Jayantibai died in 1904. Vasantrao, Yeshwantrao and Raghunathrao are his three sons from first marriage. He remained supportive to his step-daughter Rukhmabai, who was a leading physician then.
