Sai Baba Of Shirdi Biography

Sai Baba of Shirdi was one of the greatest spiritual leaders from India. He has followers and devotees worldwide. He was a guru, yogi and fakir who lived during the period late 19th century – 15 October 1918. His date of birth is still unknown. He was revered by both his Muslim and Hindu devotees and is quite uncertain if he was a Hindu or Muslim. Sai Baba stressed the importance of surrender to the guidance of the true Sadguru or Murshad and he believed in self-realization. He is being worshipped all over the world. His teachings include the principles of both Hinduism and Islam and he considered all religions and caste as equal.

One of his well known epigrams, "Sabka Malik Ek" is associated with Islam and Sufism. Another epigram, "Trust in me and your prayer shall be answered" was also popular. He always uttered "Allah Malik". He lived in a Muslim mosque given Hindu name and practised Muslim rituals. He taught lessons combining both the religions and he was buried in Shirdi. There is no accurate information about his native place, parents or date of birth. Though many communities put forward their claims, they don’t have any enough evidence. But Sai Baba's biographer Narasimha Swamiji claims that Sai Baba was born as the child of Brahmin parents. The name "Sai" was given to him upon his arrival at Shirdi when a local priest identified him as a Muslim saint. Mahalsapati, a priest of the Khandoba temple in Shirdi and Upasni Maharaj were the disciples of Sai Baba.

Shirdi Sai Baba movement began in the 19th century, while he was living in Shirdi. Mhalsapati Nagre, a local priest is believed to be his first devotee. Started with a small group in the late nineteenth century, his principles spread far during 20th century. Hindus started worshipping him with Hindu rituals while Muslims considered him to be a saint. He was also worshipped by Zoroastrians. His disciples and devotees believed that he performed many miracles such as bilocation, levitation, mindreading, materialization and exorcisms. Now Shirdi has become an important pilgrimage of Hindus.
