Sahana Kumari Biography

Sahana Kumari is an Indian athlete who excels in the high jump event. She holds the national record in high jump with a height of 1.92 meters.

 

Sahana was born on 6th March 1982 in Kotekar Village in Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka. Her father is an army man who worked in Indian Air Force and it was he who taught her high jump. Her mother’s name is Yashoda and she is very supportive to her daughter in her career. She has one sister and one brother. Her sister Harshini is a former athlete and her brother plays volleyball.

 

She studied at Anandashram High School in Someshwar and took active participation in many sports activities during her school days such as kabaddi, kho kho and high jump. Her school authorities encouraged her to take up sports. She then joined the Sri Gokarnanatheshwara College of Mangalore and got her graduation in 2002. She married the national level athlete B.G. Nagaraj and has a daughter named Pavana. She is employed as the senior clerk in the South Wester Railway Zone.

 

She competed at the 52nd National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships held at G.M.C Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad and through her achievement in that was qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. She was coached by Nikhil Evgeny of Ukraine. In the Olympics she was eliminated on 8th August 2012 when she could not clear a height of 1.85 meters.
