Saghar Nizami Biography

Saghar Nizami was an Urdu Poet, ghazal and nazm writer and one of the earliest recipients of disciples of Seemab Akbarabadi. He was born as Samad Yar Khan in Aligarh on 21 December 1905. Aside Seemab Akbarabadi, he founded "Qasr-ul-adab" in 1923 and started publication of "Paimana", a monthly magazine. When Saghar Nizami separated from Seemab and moved to Meerat, Paimana was seized. For his contributions to literature, he has been honoured with Padma Bhushan Award (1969) and the Ghalib Award (1982).

 

Saghar Nizami was born in Aligarh on 21 December 1905 as the son of doctor Sardar Ahmedyar Khan. Khan was a physician under British government. Saghar worked as the editor of Paimana from 1923 to 1932. He was a disciple of Seemab Akbarabadi during this time and together they founded this monthly magazine. In 1933 he shifted to Meerut and founded Adabi Markaz. During this time, Paimana was closed. It was through his new publishing house, the noted Urdu poet, Mehr Lal Soni Zia Fatehabadi’s first book – Tullu (collection of poems) was published, thus introducing him to literary world. Yet the work Tullu was not appreciated by critics.

 

As a writer, Saghar has published 6 books belonging to the genre of ghazals and nazms. His published books are Subuhi (1934), Badah e mashriq (1934), Kahkashaan (1934), Rangmahal (1943), Mauj e saahil (1949) and Nehrunama (1967). His collected works, Kuliat e Saghar Nizami, were later published in three volumes between 1999 and 2001. In 1985 writer Zamir Ali Khan published an appraisal of the works, life and personality of Saghar Nizami titled - Saghar Nizami - Fan aur shakhsiyat ma'a kalam. Master madan popularized a few of his ghazals like Yoon na reh reh kar hamen and Hairat se tak raha hai jahan.
