Sachin Kundalkar Biography

Sachin Kundalkar is a Marathi film director and screenplay writer, and a recipient of two National Film Awards. He won National film award for best regional film (as director) for Nirop and as a screenwriter for Gandha, for the years 2007 and 2008 respectively. Gandha is the first ever Marathi film to win best screenplay award at the prestigious National film awards. The movie also bagged Best Screenplay Award at Pune International Film Festival in 2009. Sachin has also authored a few works such as Cobalt Blue (novel), and two plays - Chotyasha Suteet and Fridge Madhe Thevlela Prem: Purnaviram. He directed Bollywood film, Aiyaa in 2012, which marked Bollywood debut of south Indian popular actor, Prithviraj Sukumaran.

 

His name is also pronounced as Sacin Kundalakar in Marathi language. Since young he was interested in film making. During younger days, once he approached Bollywood director Ashutosh Gowarikar to work under him as an assistant. However the director advised him to complete his studies first, and then come back to him. Yet he assisted Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukhthankar for 1995 National award winning film, Doghi, followed by a few more films in Marathi. After completing his degree in Commerce, he joined FTII, Pune, and once he completed the course, he received a scholarship to study at La Fémis, Paris.

 

As a part of his study project, he made his first short film, One Cafe Please. Once returned to India, he continued with making documentaries, had a brief stint in theater and then switched over to Marathi films. In 2005, documentary short film The Bath, starring Rajat Kapoor which won many awards in the international film award circuit. Restaurant, in 2006 was his first full-fledged feature film. This Marathi movie was shown at various film festivals. His second directorial film, Nirop won National award for best regional film. He continued his winning streak, and won National award for best screenplay for his next release, Gandha.

 

Happy Journey, Rajwade and Sons, Vazandar and Gulabjaam are his other Marathi releases. His film, Happy Journey has been remade and released in Malayalam in 2018 by director Anjali Menon of Bangalore Days fame. Interestingly the film starred Prithviraj in the lead role, the actor with whom Sachin Kundalkar made his single Bollywood film.
