Sabyasachi Mohapatra Biography

Sabyasachi Mohapatra is a national award winning film maker associated with Odia film industry. Many of his films are shown at film festivals, and won state and national awards too. He is an established screenwriter, producer and film director of the film industry. His production house has been named as Mohapatra Movie Magic. He produces and directs movies in Kosli and Odia languages, and has been associated with the industry since 1987. He has made only 9 films till now, in his career spanning to more than 30 years, and is a recipient of numerous honours such as Odisha Living Legend Award given by Odisha Diary Foundation. Sambhabana Oriya cinema award, International Jury award and Ganakabi Samman 2017 are other major honours received by him.

Sabyasachi Mohapatra was born on 27 August 1950 in Lehedi, Subarnapur, Odisha. His film journey began in year 1987. He marked his directorial debut with less-known film, Sabu Mayare Baya in 1987. The movie was made in Odia language. In 1989 he launched his production house and released his first film in Kosli dialect, Bhukha. The movie starring Sarat Pujari, Sadhu Meher, Bijaya Pujari and Swati Roy became the first Oriya film to get an International Jury Award at the Gijón International Film Festival.

Sabyasachi Mohapatra later directed 4 Odia films in a row – Jhili, Bou, Bahudibe Mo Jaga Balia and Jai Jagannatha (2007), followed by three Kosli dialect films - Sala Budha, Aadim Vichar and Pahada Ra Luha, and most of his movies have earned recognition at film festivals or national film awards. His last two releases - Aadim Vichar and Pahada Ra Luha, won national award for best regional films in the years 2014 and 2016 respectively. His movies – Bou and Sala Budha have won multiple state awards.
