Sabu Cyril Biography

Sabu Cyril is a national award winning art director from Kerala. He has won National awards four times and Filmfare, 5 times. Over the few years, he has been associated with many expensive Indian projects like Anniyan, Ethiran, Krish 3, Ashoka, Om Shanti Om and Ra. One. Now he is regarded as the leading art director of the country. He works in Bollywood as well as all south Indian languages. He received National award for Best Production Designer four times for the movies, Thenmavin Kombath (Malayalam) in 1994, Kaalapani (Malayalam) in 1995, Om Shanti Om (Hindi) in 2007 and Ethiran (Tamil) in 2010.

He received Kerala state awards for best art direction for the movies, Thenmavin Kombath and Kaalapani. Both the movies won National awards as well. Thenmavin Kombath earned him Kerala Film Critics Association Awards also. He received Tamil Nadu state awards for Kannathil Muthamittal in 2002. He received Filmfare awards for Hindi – Hey ram, Gardish and Yuva and for Tamil movies – Ethiran and Anniyan. He has also received International Indian Film Academy Awards for the movies – Om Shanti om, Ra.One, Robot and Aladdin. Global Indian Film Awards for Mein hoon na and International Tamil Film Award for Tamil movie, Boys are other noted honours received by Cyril. Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu, Megham, Maanthrikam and Manthrikan are other noted Malayalam movies which fetched him awards.

Sabu Cyril was born in Kerala, but now he resides at Chennai. He graduated from the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai. From 1982 to 1988, he worked as a freelance graphics designer for companies and his career as an art director began in 1988. He has been one of the leading names of the industry since 1990’s. He has directed more than 480 advertisements, 3 teleserials and 50 feature films. He often does the designing of many stage shows.
