Sabri Khan Biography

Sabri Khan was an accomplished sarangi player from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. The renowned sarangi maestro has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan by the President of India, Government of India – 2006. Earlier in 1992 he was awarded a Padma Shri for his contributions to art. He was also a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1986), Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy Award (1990), Sahitya Kala Parishad Award, Sangeet Bhushan Award (2002) and many more. He died on December 1st 2015 after a brief illness, at the age of 88. He had some breathing problems.

 

He was born in Moradabad on 21 May 1927. He belonged to the Sainia Gharana, which has music traditions back to Mian Tansen, the great musician in the court of Akbar. His grandfather, Ustad Haji Mohammed Khan and father Chajju Khan, both accomplished Sarangi exponents of their time. Sabri was initiated to the world of sarangi by his grandfather, followed by his father. He also learnt his uncle Ustad Laddan Khan of Rampur, some of the difficult and rare techniques of this art form. Though a difficult instrument to play, sabri generated his own style where the purity of raga, variety of tans, layakari and alaap-jor, adding distinct signature to this musical form.

 

He also travelled extensively popularizing sarangi across the globe and owned numerous disciples. He had also played a duet with the renowned Yehudi Menuhin, the world famous violinist and conductor. For his outstanding contributions to Sarangi, he has been honoured with numerous awards and titles. Khan received several national awards, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Padma Bhushan in 2006.
