Sabeer Bhatia Biography

Sabeer Bhatia is an Indian American software expert and entrepreneur who came to limelight after developing Hotmail email service. He acquired Jaxtr, a social communications company that melds together global calling, SMS, and social networking. He acquired it in the year 2009, for an unknown amount. He was married to Tanya Sharma in 2008. But the couple divorced most recently in 2013.  Earlier he was engaged to Geeta Oberoi in 2003.

Bhatia was born on 30 December 1968 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He was brought up in Chandigarh, Pune and finally at Bangalore, where he completed his schooling. Later he went to California Institute of Technology in the year 1988 to complete graduation. Sabeer briefly worked for Apple Computer as a hardware engineer and Firepower Systems Inc. Later he earned a master degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University. It was during his time in Apple, he along with his colleague Jack Smith, set up Hotmail on 4 July 1996. His finding that he could access any software on the internet via a web browser was the real factor behind the origin of Hotmail. Very soon Hotmail became one of the popular email service providers. At present Hotmail is the world's second largest e-mail provider with over 369 million registered users, the first one being Gmail.

As President and CEO, he played a key role in popularizing this email service provider and it was finally acquired by Microsoft in 1998. He briefly worked for about one year in Microsoft, just before its acquisition. In 1999, he started Arzoo Inc - an e-commerce firm. Bhatia started a free messaging service called JaxtrSMS. In his opinion, JaxtrSMS would do to SMS what Hotmail did for e-mail. Yet till now, JaxtrSMS has not replicated the success of Hotmail.
