S. V. Sahasranamam Biography

S. V. Sahasranamam is the short name of Singanallur Venkataramana Iyer Sahasranamam, a noted television and theater personality from Tamil. He has been an actor and director, most ative during the black and white era of Tamil cinema. Noted television actor S. V. S. Kumar is his son. This great actor was known for his unique and versatile acting skills and has appeared in more than 200 movies. He was always interested in the survival of drama for generations and was busy with the play, Nandha Vilakku when he passed away in 1988. He was 75 then and he passed away following a heart attack.

 

Sahasranamam was born on 29th November 1913 at Singanallur, near Coimbatore. Since younger days he loved drama a lot and his association with stage plays started at the age of 13. He ran away from home to join the Madurai Sri Balashanmuganandha Sabha and started his own drama company, "Seva Stage" after several years. Many of his dramas have become successful feature films onscreen and entertained audience for many years. He was mostly influenced by the works of B S Ramaiah, T Janakiraman and Ku Pa Rajagopalan to make his theatric productions.

 

He has worked with Kalaivanar N. S. Krishnan in many stage plays. When NSK and Thiyagaraja Bhagavather were put behind bars accused of a murder, he took the management of the NSK Nadaka Sabha. Though he is associated with both cinema and theater, he is mostly known as a theater artist. Theatre was his first love too. When MGR was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, he met this artist several times and has made arrangements for his stage plays in US.
