S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan Biography

Sathamangalam Ranga Iyengar Srinivasa Varadhan, better known as S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan is an Indian mathematician best known for Martingale problems and Large deviation theory. His fundamental contribution to probability theory is immensely huge, for creating a unified theory of large deviations. Government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 2008. National Medal of Science (2010), Abel Prize (2007), Steele Prize (1996) and Birkhoff Prize (1994) are other major honours received by him. He is nicknamed Raghu. Currently he is settled in US. He moved to US for the first time in 1963.

 

He was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, British India in the year 1940. He completed his undergraduate degree in 1957 from Presidency College, Chennai. He completed his doctorate in 1963 from the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata, under the guidance of C. R. Rao, famous mathematician and statistician. He was one of the "famous four" in Indian Statistical Institute during 1956-1963, the other three being  R. Ranga Rao, K. R. Parthasarathy, and Veeravalli S. Varadarajan. He worked with Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University since 1963, and published his first thesis during this period. He has also co-authored many works with Daniel Stroock, Americian mathematician and probabilist. They worked together and published thesis works of diffusion processes.

 

He currently serves as a professor at the Courant Institute. Varadhan is married to Vasundra Varadhan who is also an academic. The couple has two sons, of whom they lost one in September 11 attacks in 2001. Varadhan remained a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and has received Fellowship from Royal Society, American Mathematical Society and many more institutions.
