S. R. Bommai Biography

S. R. Bommai was an Indian politician and he served as the Human Resource Development Minister in the Cabinet of H. D. Deve Gowda and as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. He was born on 6th June 1924 at Karadagi Village of Shiggaon taluk in Dharwad District. He took active part in the Indian freedom struggle.

He took part in the Quit India Movement. He had a prominent role in the unification of Karnataka. During the British rule this was divided into Mysore Kingdom, Bombay Presidency and Madras Presidency and he worked for the formation of the Karnataka state. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Hubballi constituency. He was a member of Karnataka Legislative Council from 1972 to 1978.

He served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 13th August to 21st April 1989. He was preceded by Ramakrishna Hegde. He served as the president of the All India Progressive Janata Dal Party and as the Union Minister in the Government of India. He served as the member of Rajya Sabha for two terms.

He served as the Human Resources Development Minister in the cabinet of the then Prime Minister of India Deve Gowda. He has two sons and two daughters. His son Basavaraj Bommai is at present the Major and Medium Irrigation Minister of Karnataka and his second son Mahesh Bommai is an industrialist. His two daughters are Girija and Uma. He died on 10th October 2007 at the age of 84.
