S. Nijalingappa Biography

S. Nijalingappa was an Indian politician and a senior member of Indian National Congress. He served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1956 to 1958 and from 1962 to 1968. He was called as SN.

 

He was born on 10th December 1902 in Chitradurga of Mysore State. He studied at Central College at Bangalore in 1924. He pursued his education in Law College in Poona in 1926 and got his Law degree.

 

He started his political career in 1936 and took part in the Indian Independence Movement. After his relationship with N. S. Hardikar, he took active part in the politics. He became the President of the Pradesh Congress Committee and later the President of the All India National Congress Committee in the year 1968.

 

He served as the president of the Congress party from the year 1968 to 1971. From 1946 to 1950 he served as the member of the Constituent Assembly. He was elected to the Parliament from the Chitaldrug constituency in the year 1952 and served in this position for a period of five years till 1957.

 

He was involved in the Karnataka Ekikarana Movement. He had served as the chief minister of Mysore and Karnataka three times. He made many reforms in the state in the areas of agriculture, industries, transport and irrigational facilities that he came to be called as the Maker of Modern Karnataka.

 

He gave land to the Tibetan refugees to settle down and so they had like him very much. They were settled at Bylakuppe, Mundgod, Kollegal and Gurupura. He died on 8th August 2000 in Chitradurga. His memorial was inaugurated by Dalai Lama, the leader of Tibetans on 29th January 2011.
