S. N. Tripathi Biography

S. N. Tripathi was a film composer and playback singer associated with Bollywood since early talkies. He joined film industry in the mid-1930s, and continued working in the industry for next 5 decades till last 1980s. He has directed a few films, and appeared as an actor in a few also. Till his death in 1988, he was fully active in the industry. He turned a film director in 1957 with the movie, Rani Roopmati starring Nirupa Roy and Bharat Bhushan, and also directed the same pair in one more movie the same year titled, Kavi Kalidas. Both the movies are unforgettable for some of the songs composed by Tripathi.

 

His full name is Shri Nath Tripathi. He was born on 14th March, 1913 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. His father worked as a school principal. He took formal training in music from Morris College of Music in Lucknow. To pursue a career in films, when the era of talkies has just begun, he moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in film music. In 1935 he joined industry as a violinist and assistant under the female composer, Saraswati Devi.

 

As a film composer he marked his debut with 1942 film, Chandan. He rose to prominence in the 1950s and also marked his debut as a filmmaker in the same era. He directed Bhojpuri movies since 1963. Tripathi's first role as an actor was in the film Jeevan Naiya (1936), and he continued playing small roles on screen.  As a music composer, Rani Roopmati, Janam Janam Ke Phere, Sangeet Samrat Tansen and Lal Qila are among his best works, and some of his popular songs are "Zara Saamne Toh Aao Chhaliye", "Na Kisi Ki Ankh Ka Noor Hoon" and "Lagta Nahin Hai Dil Mera".
