S. Mohinder Biography 
S. Mohinder is a music director from Punjab. He is also known by the name, Mohinder Singh Sarna. He was the third recipient of best music director awards at National award section. He was the first Punjabi music director to won this award. He received the award in the year 1969 and most surprisingly, he still remains as the only music director from Punjabi language to receive this honour.
Mohinder Singh Sarna was born on September 8, 1925 in a small town called Sillanwali in Punjab. Mohinder’s father Sujan Singh Bakhshi was sub-inspector in the police forces. After his father’s transfer the family moved to Lyallpur, now known as Faisalabad. In Lyallpur, a big city, young Mohinder in the 1930s started an apprenticeship with an accomplished Sikh religious vocalist Sant Sujan Singh. He learned classical music under him for years and get skilled as a professional vocalist. After that, Mohinder dreamt to become a singer.
Later his family moved to Sheikhupura where he received training in classical music from Sikh religious musician Bhai Samund Singh. Frequent transfers of his father affected his studies a lot. His father enrolled him in Khalsa High School during the 1940s in the village Kairon in Amritsar. In 1947, the rest of his family moved to East Punjab. But his love for music prompted him to go to Banaras from where he continued learning. Years later, he moved to Mumbai to find an opportunity in film industry as a musician.
His first successful film was Nili (1950), which was musical hit but a film disaster. Later he became music director in Filmistan Studio which proved successful. As a music director, a few of his works include - Shirin Farhad, Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam, Do dost, Man Jeete Jaq Jeet, Shahzada, Naata, Paapi and Khoobsurat Dhokha.
