S. L. Puram Sadanandan Biography

S. L. Puram Sadanandan was a famous playwright and film scriptwriter of Kerala. He is best known for the screenplay of highly acclaimed Malayalam movie, Chemmeen directed by Ramu Kariat. He was the founder of Kalpana Theatres and Suryasoma Theatres at S.L. Puram. As a noted playwright he won Kerala Sahithya Akademi award for his play – Kakkapponnu. His film script Agni Puthri won National award for screenplay. The scripts of Oru Penninte Katha and Yavanika earned him state award for best script writer as well. He has contributed over 60 plays to Malayalam arts and he is regarded as a doyen of Malayalam Theater. He has also written the script for over 150 movies. He died on September 16, 2005.

 

He was born in S. L. Puram in Alappuzha district in 1928. He got associated with plays since his school days. He wrote plays while at school. He was also very social associated with union activities of S. L. Puram. Slowly he leaned towards leftist ideas and had close contacts with Communist leaders like R.Sugathan. He even took part in the infamous Punnapra-Vayalar uprising. He got arrested and sentenced to imprisonment and for the same reason his education seized. He later got associated with theatre and started two theatres - Kalpana Theatres and Suryasoma in his hometown and dedicated full time to it as a playwright.

 

Kudiyirakku was his first play written at the age of 16. Sreekovil in 1962 marked his entry to film world where he started as a dialogue writer. His best contribution to Malayalam cinema is the screenplay of highly acclaimed movie – Chemmeen based on Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai’s novel with the same name. He was a communist throughout his life.
