S. K. Uthappa Biography

S. K. Uthappa is a professional field hockey player from Coorg, Karnataka. He is a member of Indian field hockey team which secured qualification to the 2012 London Summer Olympic games. He was chosen for Summer Olympics on the basis of his performances against South Africa. His full name is Sannuvanda Kushalappa Uthappa. Uthappa still holds the state record for scoring the highest no of goals (16) in 5 matches. He created this record playing for Coorg team when he was 11. Uthappa was also a National level Basketball player and has represented Karnataka in National level. He has also played in badminton and football at the State Level competitions during his school days.

 

Uthappa was born on 2 December 1991in Coorg, Karnataka. He got fascinated to the game of hockey since 8, when he used to watch his elder brother playing this game for Bangalore University. Badminton, Basket ball and football were his next passions. He has been an excellent sportsman since school days and has played in state level competitions. He played Basket Ball at National level championship held at Chennai in 2004 also. Among all his passions, he chose hockey and joined Sports Authority of India at Bangalore. Uthappa was a product of the National Sports Talent Contest (NSTC) scheme at SJIHS.

 

Uthappa made his international debut against South Africa on 16 January 2012 during the first match of the Karbonn Cup Hockey five-match test series. He scored his first goal in the first match and was awarded for his shining performance. He played in 4 matches in the series and scored 3 goals also which helped him to get a position in the 2012 London Summer Olympic games.
