S. C. Jamir Biography

S. C. Jamir is an Indian politician belonging to Indian National Congress who currently serves as the Governor of Odisha. He served as the Chief Minister of Nagaland during the long period of 10 years from 22 February 1993 to 6 March 2003. He has also served as the governor of Goa, Gujarat and Maharashtra states before being appointed as the new Governor of Orissa on 9 March 2013.  Nagaland lottery scam with an inflated figure of Rs. 383 billion was first reported when he was serving as the chief minister of Nagaland. He is married to Imkonglemla since 1958 and the couple has 5 children and 12 grandchildren. His younger daughter died in 1996.

 

Jamir was born in a tribal group, Ao Naga in the year 1931. He is the grandson of Jongshinokdang who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Nagaland. His early education was done in Mokokchung and he completed his intermediate from Scottish Church College, Kolkata. He obtained his graduation and LL.B. from Allahabad University. He was the President of the Student’s Christian Movement, Allahabad from 1954 to 1957 and actively participated in those movements during his college days. He never misses Sunday Church Service up to date.

 

In the 1950s when the then Naga Hills witnessed hardships and violence, he was made Chairman of the Reception Committee by the Organizers of NPC in 1958 when he was only 27. Jamir was a member of the negotiation body in the year 1960 that demanded a separate state Nagaland for them. Thus Jamir was the first elected Lok sabha Member from the state. From 1961 to 1970, he served as MP representing the state and has also held many cabinet positions in the central government.
