Rushmi Chakravarthi Biography

Rushmi Chakravarthi is an Indian tennis player who entered professional tennis in September 2005 after her participation in the WTA Tour Sunfeast Open tournament at Kolkata.

 

Rushmi was born on 9th October 1977 in Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh and is living at Chennai in Tamil Nadu. She completed her schooling at Good Shepherd School in Chennai and her graduation in commerce from the Ethiraj College. Her parents encouraged her to practice some sports and since tennis court was nearer to her house, she started to play that in her age of eight. She did not enjoy playing tennis initially but later got an interest in the game. She started to play in the tournaments from her age of eleven.

 

Her highest world ranking in singles event is 310 as of 13th September 2004 and highest in doubles event is 252 as of 18th June 2001. She has won 45 ITF Women’s Circuit titles which is the highest number held by any Indian female player.

 

She has played in the WTA Tour at the Sunfeast Open in 2005 and 2006 and won four medals at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games among which two are gold medals. She represented India at the Asian Games held in 2002, 2006 and 2010. In the 2010 Commonwealth Games held at Delhi, in the singles events she was able to go up to the quarterfinals and in the doubles event, she won bronze medal with Sania Mirza.

 

She entered 2012 London Olympics and competed in the Women’s Doubles event along with Sania Mirza but lost in the first round. She has won WTA singles titles in 2001 in Chandigarh, 2002 in Mysore, 2003 in Muzaffarnagar, 2004 in Lucknow, 2008 in Cochin and in 2009 in New Delhi. She partnered with Jayaram, Bhambri, Raina, Venkatesha, Lakhani and few others to win the WTA doubles titles several times.
