Ruprekha Banerjee Biography

Ruprekha Banerjee is a singer from West Bengal, who shot to fame after winning the reality show on Sony Television – Fame Gurukal in 2005, a time when singing reality shows had just started flourishing after the success of Indian Idol Season 1. She also participated in Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar, a singing talent hunt show on Star Plus, and also "Royal Bengal Super Star" by Star Jalsa.

 

She along with Qazi Touqeer were declared as the winning pair and the music album Yeh Pal was released featuring both. The album included the singles - "Yeh Pal", "Karu Kya", "Madham Si Chandani" etc. The album went Double Platinum in India and sold over 5 million copies worldwide.  She was also featured in the song “Aasmaan ke paar” along with her fellow contestants of the show. The song was originally composed by Shankar-Ehsaan Loy for their album – Rockford. Arijit Singh of Aashique 2 fame and Keerthi Sagathia were among her fellow contestants of the show, who later achieved success in Bollywood playback singing.

 

Ruprekha Banerjee was born on 28th July 1984 in Bongaon of North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. Her Grandfather is a singer and her parents are patron of arts. Her father is a businessman and at the age of only 3 months her family got shifted to Agarpara, Kolkata where she spent her childhood and teens. Her singing talent was discovered by her grandfather, who noticed her hymning along with him while he practises classical music. Thus she began formal training in music at the age of 7. Fame Gurukal in 2005 gave her a good platform to showcase her singing talents.

 

She won “Uttam Kumar” Award and “Sera Bengali-2006” award following her win in Fame Gurukal. “Sananda Adittiya” Award, Best Rising Singer Award 2012 at Kalakar Awards, Radio Mirchhi Best Album 2012 for Bengali album - “Bondhu Hobe” are other major awards. She has been featured in several Hindi and Bengali albums.
